The first paper cups were conical in shape, made by hand, glued together with glue, separated more easily and had to be used as quickly as possible. Later appeared folded paper cups, in the side wall with folds, in order to increase the strength of the side wall and the durability of the paper cups, but to be in these folded surface printed on the pattern is more difficult, and the effect is not very satisfactory. 1932, the first waxed two-piece paper cups, its smooth surface can be printed on a variety of beautiful patterns, to improve the promotional effect. Paper cups coated with wax, on the one hand, to avoid direct contact between the beverage and paper, and can protect the adhesive properties of the glue, enhance the durability of the paper cup; on the other hand, also increased the thickness of the side wall, so that the strength of the paper cup greatly improved, thus reducing the amount of paper necessary to manufacture a stronger paper cup, reduce production costs. However, hot beverages melt the wax layer on the inner surface of the paper cup, and the adhesive seal separates, so normal waxed paper cups are not suitable for holding hot beverages.
In 1940, straight-walled double-walled paper cups began to be sold in the market, which were not only easy to carry, but also could be used to hold hot beverages. Subsequently, manufacturers coated these cups with latex to cover the 'cardboard flavour' of the paper material and to enhance the leak-proofness of the cups. Later, some food companies began coating cardboard with polythene to increase the barrier and sealing properties of paper packaging. Nowadays, various types of paper cups are available, such as single wall coffee cups, single wall hot cups, double wall coffee cups disposable and so on to satisfy the needs of various people.
