The main material for kraft boxes, kraft paper, was indeed made from real calf skin in the time of its origin. Today, however, this so-called 'kraft paper' is only used in the production of drum skins. The wood fibres that make up what we commonly call kraft paper are mainly from coniferous trees. Most conifers are evergreen trees, generally soft wood, some contain resin, so it is also known as softwood, including red pine, pine, larch, spruce, fir, hemlock, fir, cypress, Yunnan pine, Huashan pine, horsetail pine and other species. During the production process, these woods are first chemically made into pulp, which then enters the pulping machine for the pulping process and the addition of substances such as glues and dyes, and is finally copied into paper on the papermaking machine. This paper is named kraft paper because of its yellowish-brown colour and tough texture, which is quite similar to cowhide.
During the production of kraft paper, the wood fibres used are long, and chemicals such as caustic soda and alkali sulphide are used to treat the wood when it is cooked, which are relatively mild and cause less damage to the original strength of the wood fibres. As a result, the paper made from this pulp retains its original wood properties, and the fibres are tightly connected to each other, making kraft paper very strong and durable. In contrast, ordinary paper is usually made with shorter wood fibres and without sufficient consideration of the amount of wood pulp used, so there is a significant difference in quality with kraft paper, which is stronger than ordinary paper.
